“We’re always searching for ways to make better coffee. Bali has some great advantages over other coffee growing regions. We have short distances between processing facilities, good drying, storage, and export infrastructure, and pretty good weather. Our arabica varieties are ok, except they’re often grown on mixed plantations.

At Karana we try to maximize our strengths and develop new flavors by being quite radical in our processing. My goal at Karana is to make sweet coffees, no matter what the process.”

Karana is the collaboration between two like-minded coffee professionals sharing a passion for great Specialty Coffee. Rodney Glick, Australian, and I Kadek Edi, Indonesian both Certified Licensed Q Graders, Processors, Roasters and Coffee Supply Chain Experts.

Karana are farmers / processors / traders of Indonesian Specialty and Commercial Coffee based in Bali with a Bureau in Medan, Sumatra. Embedded in Balinese traditional village life with a focus on the global coffee market Karana are focused on quality from farm to cup. In 2021, at the first Indonesian held Cup of Excellence, Karana achieved the highest scoring Bali coffee as well as being ranked in the top 20 coffees overall.

Karana not only process red coffee cherry from Bali, East Java, and Sumatra but source Commercial and Specialty Grade green beans from all other Indonesian origins. We deal in Arabica and Robusta coffee across the Archipelago from Bali, Flores, Java, Papua, Sulawesi, and Sumatra both for export and domestic market consumption.

In 2022 Karana processed our first Sumatra Gayo Natural following on from our previous years’ East Java Natural and Cascara Tea. 2019 saw us process Bali’s first Fine Robusta’s both Honey and Natural. From 2018, in collaboration with Taiwan Barista Champion Stanley Chien and Mikael Jasin, Indonesian Barista Champion, Karana began a series of complex and detailed processed specialty lots using Arabica and Robusta Carbonic Maceration for use in competition.
